Meeting and Presentation

  • Salmon Arm Secondary School, Sullivan Campus 1641 30th St NE Salmon Arm Canada (map)

Our regular monthly meeting will be held at 7pm in the library at Salmon Arm Secondary School, Sullivan Campus in Salmon Arm. See panel to left for mapping and address details.

The meeting will begin with a Zoom presentation by Carilia Horning, who will tell us about a very exciting conservation opportunity in northern British Columbia. Carilia is working on the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y). She summarized the program, “Right now, our Kaska partners are advancing Dene Kʼéh Kusān, a bold conservation vision to safeguard roughly 40,000 square kilometres of mountains, rivers and wildlife habitat in the heart of Kaska territory. It is one of the largest Indigenous led conservation opportunities currently unfolding in Canada.”

Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) works to connect and protect habitat across one of the largest mountain landscapes on Earth so people and nature can thrive. From Yellowstone to the Yukon, we collaborate with communities, governments and Indigenous Nations to maintain the natural connections wildlife depend on.

They are supporting their Kaska partners at the Deneh Kayeh Institute in helping raise the public profile of this vision at a pivotal moment. The Province of British Columbia is now in the final stages of land use planning through the Northwest Strategy, and growing public awareness could help carry this opportunity across the finish line.

The presentation introduces the landscape, the wildlife and cultures it supports, and the collaborative work underway to protect this remarkable place.
