The Shuswap River is a key spawning location for sockeye, Chinook and coho salmon. Through several short hikes, Colin Spence and John Woods lead an exploration of spawning areas and also investigate birds, mammals and plants in adjacent habitats.
Meet at the Junglemania parking lot at 8 AM to carpool to Shuswap River and on to Kingfisher and Mabel Lake. Bring a lunch and water.
Difficulty Rating: DR-1 slow paced walking on established trails; several locations.
Sockeye Salmon
The sockeye salmon are blue tinged with silver in color while living in the ocean but when they return to spawning grounds, their bodies become red and their heads turn green. Sockeye can weigh between 2.3 to 7 kg (5–15 lb). While they remain common throughout BC, many populations are in decline as a result of overfishing, habitat loss and our changing climate.
