Meeting and Presentation

  • Salmon Arm Secondary School, Sullivan Campus 1641 30th St NE Salmon Arm Canada (map)

Our regular monthly meeting will be held at 7pm in the library at Salmon Arm Secondary School, Sullivan Campus in Salmon Arm. See panel to left for mapping and address details.

This month’s meeting features a presentation by Caleb Spyksma, who will discuss his Masters of Architecture and Masters of Landscape Architecture studies, completed this year at UBC. In his graduate student design project, Caleb developed a series of options for the Salmon Arm Bay wetland. The needs of birds, and the needs of the growing human community, were considered around a series of design strategies and an experiential framework. The design strategies responded directly to the pressing challenges of the site, while the experiential framework imagined the manner in which human visitors to the site might interact with the space over time.

Caleb has laid out as a 3-generation (or 90 year) plan, and presents hand drawings and physical sketch models to process ideas allows for a democratization of the design process beyond academia. This highlights the potential for community-driven design, especially for the places of encounter, within the context of a multi-generational plan. His work is brilliant and imaginative, and should be of great interest to anyone with interest in the value of nature in Salmon Arm Bay.
